Esme is a modern neighborhood bistro rooted in French tradition and shaped by California’s seasonal spirit. The menu brings together thoughtful, ingredient-driven dishes, a curated wine list, and a warm, intimate setting designed to feel familiar from the very first visit.
Created by chef Susan Dunn, Esme reflects a deep commitment to the neighborhood and the kind of place where anyone can become a regular. The team behind it includes some of San Francisco’s most experienced restaurant professionals, brought together by a shared passion for hospitality.
Housed within the historic Metro Hotel, Esme is part of a broader effort to reimagine and revitalize the space. In close collaboration with the family who has long stewarded the building, the restaurant honors its past while contributing to its next chapter.

As a French-inspired neighborhood bistro, Esme brings that sense of ease and warmth to California ingredients. The food is both refined and comforting, familiar but elevated, designed to be enjoyed often and without ceremony.
While French cuisine informs the approach, the menu is distinctly California at its core. It evolves with the seasons, guided by fresh produce, with a mix of small plates, pastas, and a strong focus on wine.
